Survey and variability study of the core shift effect in AGN jets

The observed position of the core in radio jets of active galactic nuclei changes with the observing frequency because of synchrotron self-absorption and external absorption. Measuring this shift allows to reconstruct geometry of the jet base, probe physical conditions close to the core and determine the core position itself more accurately. We performed successful measurements for more than 1000 quasars observed with VLBI at two frequencies (2.3 and 8.4 GHz) at different observing epochs. The core shift was measured by aligning the corresponding images using masked 2D cross-correlation and finding the core component position by model-fitting the calibrated visibility data. The method employed is semi-automatic, which delivers more robust and unbiased results. Results of the core-shift variability analysis for selected targets as well as changes of geometrical and physical parameters of their cores will be presented and discussed.

VLBI-Gaia offsets favour parsec-scale jet direction in Active Galactic Nuclei

The data release 1 (DR1) of milliarcsecond-scale accurate optical positions of stars and galaxies was recently published by the space mission Gaia. We analyze the offsets of highly accurate absolute radio (very long baseline interferometry, VLBI) and optical positions of active galactic nuclei (AGN) to check whether a signature of wavelength-dependent parsec-scale structure can be seen. We use in the analysis astrometric positions of thousands of AGNs from the VLBI and Gaia observations as well as reconstructed VLBI images. We have found that there is a statistically significant excess of sources with VLBI-to-Gaia positional offset directions along the jet for a full range of offset values as well as an excess for the direction opposite to the jet if offset values are less than 3 mas. An existence of strong extended parsec-scale optical jet structure in many AGNs is required to explain the observed VLBI-Gaia offsets along the jet direction. The 1-mas offsets in the opposite direction are explained by a non-point-like VLBI jet structure or the "core-shift" effect due to synchrotron opacity.

Core shift variability in AGN jets

The observed position of the core in radio jets of active galactic nuclei changes with the observing frequency because of synchrotron self-absorption and external absorption. Measuring this shift allows to reconstruct geometry of the jet base, probe physical conditions close to the core and determine the core position itself more accurately. We performed successful measurements for more than 20 quasars observed with VLBI at two frequencies (2 and 8 GHz) at 20 to 50 observing epochs per source covering the time interval from 1994 to 2012. The core shift was measured by aligning the corresponding images using 2D cross-correlation with automatically determined mask and finding the core component position by model-fitting the core region of calibrated visibility data. The method employed is almost automatic, which delivers robust and unbiased results. Prominent core shift variability is found for the first time in several targets including J0136+4751, J1642+6856. We present these results, discuss relation between core shift changes and observed flares, and estimate upper bounds on variability for all sources. Interpretation and implications for astrometry and astrophysics will be considered.

Results of 2-8 GHz core-shift measurements in a large sample of AGNs and their astrometric implications

The observed position of bright cores of active galactic nuclei changes with observing frequency because of synchrotron self-absorption and external absorption. The shift can be applied to improve accuracy of the radio reference frame as well as to tie the VLBI-to-Gaia frames more accurately. We could also reconstruct geometry of the jet base and probe physical conditions close to the core. We measured the core shift by aligning VLBI maps of a source reconstructed at different frequencies using 2D cross-correlation and model-fitting the core region of calibrated visibility data. The method employed is almost completely automatic. It delivers robust results minimizing possible biases. We successfully determined core shifts for about a thousand quasars observed with the global VLBI at two frequencies, 2 and 8 GHz, at epochs ranging from 1994 to 2016. For many of the sources, a number of independent measurements were performed at different epochs allowing us to analyze for possible variability of the shift. Results are presented, together with discussion of their astrometric and astrophysical applications.
